If not for the Personal Evacuation Kits, the Blackout of 2003 could have been a disaster. To our horror, the backup generator in our mid-town Manhattan office building failed and, as a result, the escape stairwells fell into complete darkness. Equipped with the kit's mini-mag flashlight, however, all of our employees were able to safely maneuver themselves and assist others down 20 flights of stairs. And for those of us who chose to embark on the arduous walk home over the bridges and through the tunnels to Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Long Island our purified emergency drinking water was priceless. In addition, because our kits were equipped with a thermal blanket for protection and a whistle to call for emergency assistance, we all felt much more prepared for the situation had it worsened.
